Talk With Someone Like You

Embark on a journey with Talk With Someone Like You to reclaim your medical journey and connect with chronically ill and disabled kids like you.

👋 Hello!

I'm a 20 year old chronically ill and disabled student at Brown University. Navigating growing up while experiencing a chronic illness and disability was a challenge. I hope to help other kids like me navigate their own journeys with ease and by building community.

More about my journey...

background

Hip Dysplasia, Labral Tears, Hip impingements, and More

I grew up being a very active kid. Once 5th grade hit, I started to feel a sharp pinching feeling in my hip. This small feeling turned into 3 major hip surgeries, dozens of mini procedures, multiple cycles of physical therapy and injections, and I now live with chronic pain as a young adult.

Lactose Intolerance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Being part of a study

I always had a sensitive stomach, but the intense pains and nausea picked up around the same time as my hip pains. The diagnoses started out as 'being dramatic' or 'just lactose intolerance' and later turned into 'It's hard to tell, so IBS'. I am now part of a study connecting the nervous system and stomach pain.

On top of my physical experiences, I was also trying to navigate what was going on in my mind. This is a journey I am still on today.

Our Team

We are a team of students at Brown University and University of Pittsburgh working towards a better tomorrow. Dr. Michael Berman, linguistic anthropologist, is an official advisor to Talk With Someone Like You. I, Lindsey Hayward, started dreaming about creating T.W.S.L.Y. when I was in middle school. Navigating life with chronic pain while being undiagnosed took a toll on my mental well being, physical well being, and social well being. I always wished, 'If only there was someone I could talk to who would understand'. Turns out there were, I just had nowhere to look. Since that moment, I knew I would create a social platform to connect kids with similar medical journeys, so that hopefully one day I could help people feel less alone in their journeys.

Dr.Michael Berman

His publications have contributed to our understanding of topics ranging from the politics of listening and hope to secular forms of governance and have appeared in multiple top-tier scholarly journals such as American Ethnologist, the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology, positions: Asia critique, and Language and Communication.
